Biographical sketches
Sergi Díez is currently a Tenured Scientist at the Department of
Environmental Chemistry at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and
Water Research (IDÆA-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain. He completed part of
his Ph.D. research in USA (University of Tennessee and University of
Kentucky) and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Autonomous
University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1994. Afterwards, he worked at
University of Porto, Portugal, as a postdoctoral Marie Curie Fellow
(1995). From 1996 to 1999 he held a postdoctoral position at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA, and
returned to Spain holding a RED-Generalitat de Catalunya contract to
work at the CSIC. In 2003 he gained a Ramón y Cajal scientific position
until he was appointed to CSIC staff member. His main research interests
focus on the development of analytical methodologies for trace metal
speciation and fate of pollutants (metals, organics and organometallics)
in the environment.
At present, he is involved in studies on the biogeochemical cycling of mercury and methylmercury in aquatic ecosystems and biomarkers for human exposure assessment of mercury. Dr. Díez has recently been developing passive sampling approaches with Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) devices for monitoring of mercury speciation in different aquatic environments.
